Due to popular demand ......

So a bit of banter has been going around a few blogs and emails regarding the beloved national Aussie food of VEGEMITE! So due to popular demand here it is (Karin, Wendy and Leah):

Vegemite is a dark brown (not s*** like some people rudely say) savoury food paste made from yeast extract, used mainly as a spread on sandwiches, toast and cracker biscuits, as well as a filling of pastries like Cheesymite Scroll (yum-oh), in Australia and NZ. It is similar to British and Marmite (YUCK!) in texture and appearance but not flavour and to Swiss Cenovis.

Vegemite is popular with many Australians, who commonly consider it a national food and a cultural icon. It can be found in shops around the world, particularly where there are large populations of Aussie expats. Vegemite has not been successfully marketed in other countries, apart from New Zealand, and has failed to catch on in the United States, despite being owned by US food company Kraft. Reports that US customs agents are searching Australians and New Zealanders for Vegemite has created consternation among antipodean expatriates in America ..... The US Food and Drug Administration has long prohibited imports of Vegemite ..... "Vegemite made me the man I am today," said Brad Blanks, a reporter with a New York breakfast radio show. "In Australia the slogan is that Vegemite puts a rose in every cheek; but today America has slapped the cheek of every Australian."

LONG LIVE AUSTRALIA! LONG LIVE VEGEMITE!

(they don't know what they are missing out on!)

ps. you can keep your head cheese and rocky mountain oysters!

MWA!!

Sorry, friend... tried it... and I have to say... oh, I did not like it! And my Aussie friends laughed the whole while as if they knew a great secret that I didn't so... I think you must have to have Aussie blood in you to enjoy this particular creation!

Now Cherry Ripe... that's an entirely different story... a little bit of heaven on earth!!!!!

Hysterical!!! I can't believe that we Americans haven't caught the vegemite craze....Yikes....maybe they need to do some clever product placement in a Russell Crowe movie...

I can't quite imagine myself trying it.....but....you never know!!

Yes, and the Brits have Marmite! All yeasty and smelly, just like the cousin from the south called Vegamite! Have at it my friend!

Isn't it amazing how our taste buds around the world are so different?

PS I don't think either head cheese or rocky mountain oysters would be considered a national food...most Americans probably don't even know what that is!
